8 ways to calm down kids

All kids have a hard time regulating their emotions at some time in their life. Some have a harder time than others. For those that need a bit of extra help, these calming tools that they can do anywhere, will provide them with the skills required to calm down in any situation.

1. Count to 5.

Counting a is great way to help kids learn how to stop and think before reacting with emotion. Impulse control is difficult for young children. This strategy gives them an opportunity to think before they act.

2. Take a deep breath.

Deep breathing is a great relaxation method. It helps their heart rate slow down and calm their bodies.

3. Blow into your hands.

This technique promotes deep breathing. By blowing directly into their hands, the child receives feedback and can feel the strength of their breaths.

4. Place hands in pocket.

This provides kids with physical restraint. An alternative to this can be sitting on hands or clasp them tightly.

5. Acknowledge antecedents to anger.

It is important for kids to understand what happens to their bodies when they become angry. They can observe their face using a mirror

6. Make a fist, then relax the hand.

Squeezing hands into a tight fist and then releasing is a great way to remove existing tension in the body.

7. Do a body scan.

Start at the head and work down the body to notice areas of tension and relax those muscles one by one.

8. Ask for a hug.

Hugs release love hormones and calm the body. Hugs make everything better. Find someone you love and hug it out.

Some of these included, a 100th day workout, a drawing of what they would look like if they were 100 years old, 100 day writing prompts and many more fun activities. Students were also provided with activities to complete at home. It was wonderful to see everyone participate and enjoy the sessions.

Dear Sirius College Family,

I would like to start this submission off with thanking each and every single one of you for completing this term successfully. It has sure been a long term with a lot of hard work put in by students, parents and staff. Without the dedication of staff, parents and students we wouldn’t have been able to complete the term.

During this term our amazing students in Year 1 have been busy writing Procedural texts and even modelling them. Students were able to make homemade sock puppets, play dough and even made delicious cereal. All year 1 staff are very proud of all the time and effort students and parents have invested in learning this term.

Unfortunately, this term, as we have been learning remotely, we missed out on having an assembly. So, this term we also had our first virtual assembly which students were very excited to see. We had a tour of our new campus and cannot wait to get back to learning on site!

Finally, we also had crazy hair day/casual day. It was great to see students join our Zoom sessions with crazy hair and giggle during our sessions. It was a great little break from all the hard work they have been doing.

Overall, it has been a great term! The year 1 team absolutely loves their zoom sessions where they get to connect with their beautiful students. We appreciate all the effort that our students and parents have put in to remote learning and cannot wait to see you all once again.
